Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir will arrive in Tehran on Monday to discuss bilateral cooperation and Islamabad's mediation efforts between Iran and the United States, as diplomatic efforts to resolve the war over the Strait of Hormuz remain stalled following recent military clashes.
Tehran visit
Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir will visit the Iranian capital on Monday to bolster bilateral cooperation and discuss Islamabad's role as a mediator between Iran and the United States, Iran's Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday. Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesman for the ministry, stated that the delegation aims to build on "Pakistan's efforts to help strengthen peace and security in the region," according to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency.
Munir is scheduled to hold discussions with senior Iranian officials during the trip as Pakistan maintains close contact with both sides of the conflict. The visit comes amid heightened regional tensions and Islamabad's continued efforts to facilitate dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
Stalled negotiations
Pakistan has acted as a key mediator throughout the war, maintaining close contact with both Tehran and Washington as regional tensions persist. The US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 to launch negotiations toward a final agreement, though talks subsequently stalled over disagreements on security guarantees and freedom of navigation through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Between July 8 and July 24, the US and Iran exchanged military strikes, with Washington launching attacks on targets inside Iran and Tehran responding by striking US military facilities in Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait. The latest diplomatic push comes as both sides remain deadlocked over conditions for reopening the vital chokepoint for global energy supplies.
