Pakistan's Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone call to discuss regional security and ways to restart long-stalled direct negotiations between Tehran and Washington aimed at ending the months-long war, according to official statements.
Diplomatic push
Pakistan's Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed "regional developments and effective ways to strengthen peace, stability and security in West Asia," according to a post by the Iranian government on X. The conversation covered regional security challenges and strategies for reinforcing stability, Mehr news agency reported, citing an Iranian Foreign Ministry readout.
The latest contact comes amid a renewed push by mediators Pakistan and Qatar to bring the two warring sides to the table following the expiration of a 60-day deadline to reach a final agreement. The US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 to launch negotiations toward a final agreement, though the talks later stalled over disagreements on security guarantees and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Military exchanges
Between July 8 and July 24, Washington and Tehran exchanged military strikes, with the US launching attacks on targets inside Iran and Tehran responding by striking American military facilities and equipment in Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait. Islamabad has acted as a key mediator between Iran and the US throughout the war and has maintained close contact with both sides.
Pakistani government sources told Anadolu that Munir, who has been actively involved in the mediation process, is expected to visit Tehran "in the coming days" as part of the latest attempt to restart the direct talks. No official announcement of the trip has been made by the government or Pakistan's army.
