Romania scrambles F-16s after detecting aerial targets near Ukraine

Romania's Defense Ministry announced Thursday that it scrambled two F-16 fighter jets overnight after detecting a group of five aerial targets near the Ukrainian border, with one object briefly penetrating national airspace before explosions rocked Ukrainian territory shortly thereafter.

Air defense activation

Ground-based radar systems detected the unidentified objects at 01:27 on the night of August 12 to 13 in the Ismail area over Ukrainian territory near the river border, the ministry said in a statement. "The radar surveillance system of the Romanian Ministry of National Defence detected, on the night of August 12 to 13, at 01:27, a group of five aerial targets in the Ismail area, over the Ukrainian territory, near the river border with Romania," the ministry said. Two F-16 jets were subsequently scrambled to monitor the approach, officials noted.

Border breach

One of the targets crossed into Romanian airspace approximately two kilometers south of Pardina, remaining within national territory for roughly ten minutes as it tracked along the Chilia branch of the Danube River. "Ground radars detected an aerial target penetrating the national airspace, approximately 2 km south of Pardina. The target remained in the national airspace for about 10 minutes, moving along the Chilia branch, before leaving the Romanian territory towards Ukraine," the statement explained. The object exited Romanian airspace heading back toward Ukraine without incident, authorities confirmed.

Explosions reported

Shortly after the aerial target departed Romanian airspace, explosions were reported over Ukrainian territory, the ministry added. The statement did not specify the nature of the targets or the cause of the subsequent blasts across the border. Bucharest has repeatedly scrambled fighter jets to intercept aerial objects approaching its border since the escalation of hostilities in Ukraine.
