Fenerbahce beat Lyon to qualify for Champions League after 17 years

Fenerbahce secured a 2-1 victory away to Lyon on Wednesday to qualify for the UEFA Champions League league phase, ending a 17-year absence from Europe's elite competition and completing a 3-2 aggregate triumph. The Istanbul-based club, which drew 1-1 in the first leg at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium last week, last featured in the group stage during the 2008-09 campaign under then-manager Luis Aragones, and will now compete among the continent's top sides for the first time since that season.

The qualification marks the definitive end of a prolonged exclusion that included a controversial two-season ban imposed by UEFA following the 2011 match-fixing investigation. Fenerbahce were barred from the Champions League despite winning the 2010-11 Super Lig title, preventing their participation in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 editions of the competition. Former president Aziz Yildirim was later acquitted in a retrial, while a 2016 prosecution indictment described the case as a plot orchestrated by members of the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) who had infiltrated Türkiye's judiciary and police forces.

First-half dominance

Manager José Mourinho's side controlled the opening 45 minutes at the Groupama Stadium, establishing a 2-0 lead on the night and a commanding 3-1 aggregate advantage that proved decisive. Vedat Muriqi opened the scoring in the 24th minute, reacting quickly to fire home the rebound after his initial header was parried by Lyon goalkeeper Dominik Greif following a dangerous cross from Oguz Aydin. Four minutes later, Archie Brown rose highest to meet Mason Greenwood's corner delivery, heading powerfully into the top-left corner from close range to double the advantage and put the Turkish side in a commanding position.

The visitors had earlier threatened when Oguz Aydin's deep corner struck the crossbar in the 20th minute, while the winger also forced a save from Greif in the 13th minute after being played through by Anderson Talisca. Lyon offered limited threat in the first period despite starting brightly, with Malick Fofana testing Ederson from distance early on, though they came close to reducing the deficit when Muriqi's attempted clearance from a corner struck his own post. Goalkeeper Ederson also denied Tyler Morton with a fine save from outside the box in the 41st minute as Fenerbahce protected their advantage at the interval.

Lyon fightback thwarted

The hosts emerged with renewed attacking intent after halftime, having begun the second period with greater urgency that put Fenerbahce under pressure during the opening 10 minutes, and pulled one back in the 61st minute through sustained pressure. Ainsley Maitland-Niles found Malick Fofana on the left side of the box, and the forward sent a low left-footed effort into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-1 on the night and briefly raise hopes of a comeback. Lyon thought they had equalized three minutes later when Lois Openda headed Abner Vinicius' cross into the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review that showed the striker had strayed beyond the last defender.

The French side's frustrations continued in the 71st minute when substitute Kail Boudache found the net, only for referee Marco Guida to overturn the decision after a VAR review ruled that Zachary Athekame had fouled Brown during the buildup. Fenerbahce held on despite sustained late pressure, with former Arsenal and Olympique de Marseille midfielder Matteo Guendouzi seeing a deflected effort saved by Greif in the 82nd minute. The final whistle sparked celebrations among the traveling Fenerbahce supporters who had filled the away section of the Groupama Stadium, sealing an emotional return to the Champions League group stage after a 17-year wait.
