China calls on US to maintain nuclear test ban amid global concerns

Beijing has urged Washington to respect the long-standing global moratorium on nuclear testing after reports that former US President Donald Trump instructed the Pentagon to prepare for renewed tests — a move that would mark America’s first in more than three decades and risk destabilizing the fragile global arms control landscape.
China on Monday appealed to the United States to continue honoring the global nuclear test moratorium, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strategic stability and upholding international non-proliferation efforts. The call came after reports that former US President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon to make preparations for renewed nuclear weapons testing — an action that would reverse more than 30 years of restraint.
Beijing’s stance on nuclear policy
Speaking in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stressed that China remains committed to peaceful development and to a defense policy that excludes the first use of nuclear weapons. “We urge the United States to act responsibly, preserve the global strategic balance, and take tangible steps to support international disarmament and the non-proliferation regime,” Mao said during a press briefing.
Commitment to global treaties
Mao underlined that China continues to support the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and is ready to cooperate with other nations to strengthen disarmament efforts. She reiterated that Beijing’s nuclear capabilities serve defensive purposes and are aimed at maintaining stability rather than escalating tensions.
Trump’s claim on other nations’ testing
Over the weekend, Trump alleged that other major powers, including Russia and China, have been conducting nuclear tests, asserting that Washington should not “fall behind.” His statement followed his reported directive to resume nuclear testing — something not seen since the early 1990s. Such a move, if realized, could strain global arms control agreements and raise alarms among countries like Türkiye, which advocate for diplomatic and peaceful solutions to nuclear challenges.
