Google and Turkcell announce $3 billion cloud investment in Türkiye
A major $3 billion cloud infrastructure investment in Türkiye has been unveiled through a partnership between Google and Turkcell. A landmark $3 billion investment in Türkiye's digital infrastructure was announced, spearheaded by a strategic partnership between Google Cloud and the Turkish telecommunications leader Turkcell. The collaboration, revealed at a Google Cloud Day event in Istanbul, is projected to act as a significant catalyst for additional technological investments in the country, strengthening its regional standing in cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
Strategic Partnership for a Cloud Region
The investment structure involves Google Cloud committing $2 billion, while Turkcell will invest $1 billion. The cornerstone of this initiative is the planned establishment of a Google Cloud region within Türkiye, for which Turkcell will provide critical infrastructure support. This hyperscale cloud region, expected to become operational between 2028 and 2029, will mark a substantial expansion of Turkcell's data center portfolio and provide a foundational platform for advanced technologies.
A Vote of Confidence in the Turkish Economy
Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, speaking at the event, emphasized the broader significance of the investment. "This investment also reflects the confidence international investors have in the strength, resilience, and innovation capacity of our economy," he stated. The move is seen as a powerful endorsement from a global technology leader, validating Türkiye's economic strategy and its potential as a hub for high-tech industry.
Fueling a National Digital Ambition
The investment aligns perfectly with Türkiye's ambitious national goals for data infrastructure. Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir noted that the country aims to boost its data center capacity from the current 250 megawatts to 1 gigawatt by 2030. "Our businesses, entrepreneurs, public institutions, and researchers will now have access to world-class hyperscale cloud infrastructure," Kacir said, adding that the government's supportive policies are designed to mobilize a total of $10 billion in data center and AI investments by the end of the decade.
