Senior woman in India becomes first-time mom through invitro fertilization
A 72-year-old woman in Punjab has become the oldest woman ever to give birth with the help of an in vitro fertilization clinic.
The new mom, Daljinder Kaur, and her husband Mohinder Singh Gill, 79, have been married for 49 years. The couple decided to save up to visit a doctor after they failed to become parents for nearly 46 years.
Kaur spotted an advertisement recommending that couples who wanted to become parents visit the National Fertility and Test Tube Baby Center. Gill made a series of visits to the clinic in Hisar city.
With the help of medics at the IVF center, Kaur found she was pregnant with their third baby in July 2015 after two unsuccessful attempts. She gave birth to a boy, Arman Singh, by Caesarean section in April after undergoing treatment since 2013.
"We will raise him and give him a proper education," Kaur told the Telegraph. "I had faith in Almighty that I will have my own baby, and Waheguru answered my prayers," she said, using the Sikh term for the deity.
The fertility clinic has been criticized for encouraging older women to have babies after Kaur's experience became international news. The Indian Council of Health has put forward a draft calling for a ban on women over 50 from IFV procedures.
Previously, Indian Rajo Devi Lohan held the record for being the oldest woman to give birth, in 2008.
