Ancient street leading to Side’s second main gate unearthed in Antalya

An ancient Roman street leading to the second main gate of the ancient city of Side has been uncovered during excavations in Antalya’s Manavgat district. The work is part of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s “Heritage for the Future” project, which continues restoration and excavation efforts across Türkiye.
Archaeologists have unearthed an ancient street leading to the second main gate of the ancient city of Side, located in the Manavgat district of Antalya, Türkiye. The discovery was made during ongoing excavation and restoration works carried out under the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s “Heritage for the Future” project. Side, a prominent port city in antiquity, was founded in the 7th century BCE and later flourished under Roman and Byzantine rule.

Historical significance
The newly uncovered street provides insight into the urban planning of Side, which was known for its grand gates, colonnaded streets, and temples. The second main gate, likely dating to the Roman period, served as a secondary entrance to the city’s defensive walls. The street is lined with remnants of columns and paving stones, suggesting it was a major thoroughfare. Excavation teams are continuing to clear debris and document the findings. The “Heritage for the Future” project has previously uncovered significant structures in Side, including a monumental fountain and a Byzantine basilica.

Türkiye’s cultural heritage
For Türkiye, which has invested heavily in archaeological tourism, the discovery boosts the country’s cultural appeal. Side is already a major tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors annually to its well-preserved theater, Apollo Temple, and ancient harbor. The new excavation adds another layer to the site’s historical narrative. Turkish officials have emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting Anatolia’s rich heritage, which spans Hittite, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman civilizations.
