Bilkent, Sabancı, Koç and Boğaziçi are among the first-class schools in terms of teaching and research outlook, says academic research by the Ankara-based school
An academic survey by a leading Turkish university has revealed the 15 top universities in the country's higher eduation league table.
The Ankara-based ODTU has been topped in terms of teaching and research outlook by achieving the highest score, 767. Another Ankara-based university, Hacettepe, has climbed up to second place with a score of 705.
Istanbul University secured the third-highest score, 697, while Bilkent University and Ankara University ranked in the top 10 third fourth and fifth places, respectively.
The 2015-2016 research, conducted by Middle East Technical University (ODTU), has ranked 136 schools in terms of their academic performances. The study was carried out by the ODTU-run University Ranking by Academic Performance Research Laboratory (URAP).
URAP was founded at the Informatics Institute of ODTÜ in 2009. It aims to develop a ranking system for academic performances of Turkish universities in terms of quality and quantity of scholarly publications.
A senior academic said the URAP's research has aimed to help Turkish universities rise to higher positions in worldwide rankings. “The findings show which fields the universities are deficient in so that they can develop themselves accurately and properly," Ural Akbulut, the head of URAP, told reporters in Ankara.
“Five Turkish universities have found a place among the top 500 universities worldwide. Despite staff shortages and financial difficulties, they have still managed to succeed. Ten Turkish universities rocketed into the world top 1,000 universities, and 76 others moved up to the elite world top 2000 internationally," he elaborated.
The research, which has been conducted regularly since 2009, showed that Turkish universities began finding higher rankings on the global scale than many in the Europe and the United States, considering that there are 20,000 universities worldwide.
The URAP research ranks universities on measures like the total number of acedemic articles, the number of articles per staff, the total number of scientific documents and the number of scientific documents per staff.
The number and percentage of doctoral students are among the two main criteria that the universities are expected to meet in order to find a place at the top in Turkey's best higher education league.
