Türkiye will also be providing support to Syria’s flight safety with radar systems made by Turkish defense firm Aselsan next week, Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said in a statement on Friday.
Uraloglu said Turkish systems will ensure safe landing and takeoff at Damascus Airport. The technical installation will begin after the infrastructure is established.
“The ILS device, facilitating aircraft landing on the runway, and the DVOR/DME system used in providing aircraft with direction and distance data were sent to Damascus Airport on Sep. 17,” he said. “These devices allow pilots to approach the runway in a safe manner and at the correct angle, even in adverse weather conditions.”
The minister also noted that a primary and secondary radar system, the PSR/SSR, and an approach control system called the APP will be installed at the airport.
“These systems enable aircraft tracking in the air, allowing for air traffic and the air tower to operate with more reliable data,” he said.
“Aselsan is responsible for installing the radar and control systems, and construction has started—parts for the radar systems made by Aselsan will begin shipping next week,” he added.
