Erdoğan: Israel’s expansionism main threat to region

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told a joint news conference with Algerian leader Abdelmadjid Tebboune that Israel’s “lawless and norm-defying” policies pose the primary security threat to the region. Both leaders condemned Israeli violations and reaffirmed support for a two-state solution.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has declared that Israel’s expansionist ambitions represent the single greatest danger to regional stability. Speaking alongside Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in Ankara following a High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meeting, Erdoğan stated: “Israeli aggression has once again shown that the main security problem for our region is the expansionist, lawless and norm-defying policies of the current government.”
Shared stance on Palestine and regional crises
Erdoğan emphasized that Türkiye and Algeria share a common position on ending the escalating violence that threatens peace and security. Both nations are among the strongest advocates of a two-state solution for Palestine. Erdoğan praised Algeria’s recent UN Security Council term and its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause. Tebboune, in turn, condemned “the Israeli occupation, its violations of international humanitarian law, its blatant attacks on Lebanon, and its barbaric practices in the Gaza Strip.” The two leaders also expressed concern over Israel’s recognition of breakaway Somaliland, warning it violates Somalia’s sovereignty and threatens the Horn of Africa’s stability.
Bilateral cooperation and economic targets
The two presidents co-chaired strategic talks and witnessed the signing of several agreements, including a memorandum on combating disinformation. Erdoğan noted that over 1,600 Turkish companies operate in Algeria, with total investments reaching 8 billion. The two sides have intensified efforts toward a 10 billion bilateral trade target set in 2023. Cooperation in energy, mining, defense, agriculture, and renewable energy was also on the agenda. Erdoğan confirmed that Türkiye stands ready to contribute to Algeria’s agricultural development and food security.

Highest state decoration awarded
After the press conference, Erdoğan conferred Türkiye’s highest state decoration, the State Order of the Republic of Türkiye, upon President Tebboune. Erdoğan described Algeria as “shining like a star” in its region under Tebboune’s “New Algeria Vision.” Tebboune, who arrived on a three-day official visit, said he was “greatly honored” and called the award a sincere reflection of shared goals. Erdoğan also commemorated the victims of the Setif and Guelma massacres ahead of their 81st anniversary, offering condolences to Algeria’s people.
