Redcar and Cleveland Council leader Alec Brown announced that authorities deployed over 200 extra police officers from forces across the country to northeastern England following a week of deadly incidents, adding that he would write to Prime Minister Andy Burnham to request additional resources.

Redcar and Cleveland Council leader Alec Brown announced on Thursday that over 200 additional police officers have been dispatched to northeastern England following a string of deadly incidents across Middlesbrough in just one week, stating that local authorities are working extended hours to ensure resident safety. Writing on the social media platform Facebook, Brown said authorities are “working 20 hour days” to protect innocent residents, adding that the reinforcements include detectives and armed response units drawn from forces nationwide.

“Over 200 extra police officers from forces around the country are here and are on route, from detectives to armed response,” Brown noted in his statement, indicating that he would write to Prime Minister Andy Burnham to ask for “even more resource.” He added: “People need to feel safe in their homes.”

Fatal incidents shock region

The emergency deployment follows a devastating week in the region, including a house fire in Grangetown on Wednesday that killed a woman and a seven-year-old girl just one mile from the site of a fatal head-on collision that claimed the lives of two police officers and five young men last Saturday. Brown said everyone is heartbroken over the loss of the aunt and the little girl in Grangetown, underscoring the trauma gripping the community.

Latest crash adds to tensions

Hours before Brown’s announcement, a vehicle crashed into a wall outside a house in Steele Crescent, South Bank, in the early hours of Thursday morning, located minutes from the two other scenes, according to Sky News. The series of violent incidents has left residents shaken as authorities scramble to restore order across the affected neighborhoods.
