Colombian immigration authorities have deported nine members of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect Lev Tahor following the rescue of 17 minors from the group. The expelled adults and children were transferred to US custody and flown to New York. The minors are now under the protection of New York's Child Protective Services.

Colombia has expelled nine adult members of the controversial ultra-Orthodox Jewish group Lev Tahor, authorities announced on Monday. The deportation follows a recent operation that led to the rescue of 17 children from the sect, which is accused of subjecting minors to abuse. The group members and the rescued children have been handed over to United States authorities.

Transfer to US Custody and Child Protection

According to Colombia's immigration authority, the nine expelled adults were transferred into US custody. They, along with the 17 minors, were flown to New York. The children, who had entered Colombia legally with family members in late October, have been placed under the care of New York State's Child Protective Services to ensure their safety and rights are upheld.

Coordinated International Operation

The rescue and expulsion were the result of a coordinated operation triggered by an Interpol yellow notice issued on November 13. Colombian agencies, including the immigration authority, the Eastern Military GAULA, and the Colombian Family Welfare Institute, worked together to locate and secure the children after the group entered via Cartagena and Medellin airports.

Global Scrutiny of Lev Tahor Sect

Lev Tahor has faced international investigations and is widely described by authorities and former members as a cult-like sect. It enforces extreme interpretations of Jewish law, isolates followers, and has been linked to reports of forced marriages and harsh living conditions. The group's practices have drawn global scrutiny, leading to law enforcement actions in multiple countries over the past decade.
