Iran's armed forces confirmed Sunday that four senior military officials, including the armed forces chief of staff and IRGC commander, were killed in US-Israeli attacks that began Saturday. The strikes also claimed the life of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering a 40-day mourning period.

Iran's military leadership suffered catastrophic losses in the US-Israeli strikes that began Saturday, with the armed forces confirming the deaths of four senior commanders during a Defense Council meeting. According to the semi-official Fars News Agency, the targeted meeting resulted in the killing of Iran's Armed Forces Chief of Staff Abdolrahim Mousavi, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Commander Mohammad Pakpour, Defense Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani, and Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh.

Additional commanders killed

The Foundation for the Preservation and Publication of Sacred Defense Works and Values released an expanded list of senior figures killed in the aerial raids. Among the deceased are Maj. Gen. Mohammad Shirazi, Head of the Office of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces; Gen. Shahid Saleh Asadi, deputy for intelligence of the general staff; and Maj. Gen. Mohsen Darebaghi, deputy chief of logistics and industrial research. The foundation also confirmed the deaths of Maj. Gen. Akbar Ebrahimzadeh, Deputy Chief of the Supreme Leader's Office; Maj. Gen. Gholamreza Rezaeian, head of the Intelligence Organization of the Law Enforcement Command; Maj. Gen. Bahram Hosseini Motlagh, head of Plans and Operations; and Maj. Gen. Hassanali Tajik, head of Logistics.

Leadership decapitated

Beyond the military command structure, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was also killed in Saturday's attacks, creating an unprecedented leadership vacuum in the Islamic Republic. Iranian authorities have declared a 40-day mourning period and established an interim Leadership Council comprising President Masoud Pezeshkian, Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i, and Guardian Council member Alireza Arafi until the Assembly of Experts can select a permanent successor.

Regional fallout expands

The decapitation of Iran's military and political leadership has dramatically escalated the conflict, with Tehran already launching retaliatory missile and drone strikes targeting Israeli territory, American assets, and Gulf countries. The strikes mark the most significant escalation since the US-Israeli operation last June that triggered a 12-day war. As Iran grapples with the loss of its top commanders and supreme leader, regional capitals are bracing for further retaliation and potential instability across the Middle East.
