Victims' associations have filed a formal complaint with UEFA demanding disciplinary proceedings against FC Borac Banja Luka over alleged glorification of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic during matches, calling on European football's governing body to hold the Bosnian club accountable for repeated regulatory violations.

Several Bosnian victims' associations have submitted a formal complaint to UEFA requesting disciplinary proceedings against FC Borac Banja Luka over the alleged glorification of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic during the club's matches, FENA news agency reported Tuesday.

Alleged violations

The associations contend that supporters have repeatedly displayed banners, symbols and messages celebrating Mladic, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the 1992-95 Bosnian war. They argue these actions constitute serious violations of UEFA's disciplinary regulations and warrant immediate intervention from European football's governing body.

War criminal's conviction

Mladic commanded Bosnian Serb forces during the 1992-95 conflict before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia convicted him of genocide and crimes against humanity in 2017. The UN Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals upheld his life sentence on appeal in 2021, and he died on August 27 while incarcerated in a United Nations detention facility in The Hague.

Calls for action

The victim groups urged UEFA to investigate the reported incidents thoroughly and implement appropriate sanctions if disciplinary violations are established. The associations documented multiple instances of Mladic glorification at FC Borac matches since the former commander's death in Dutch custody on August 27.
