Comprehensive pact covers trade, security and technology
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin concluded talks in Dublin on Saturday with a comprehensive agreement to deepen bilateral cooperation across trade, investment, security and technology sectors. The two leaders described the accord as a "practical, forward-looking, and action-oriented framework" for strengthening the relationship.
Economic resilience and defense ties
The commitment comes ahead of Ireland's assumption of the Council of the EU presidency on July 1. In a joint statement, the two leaders said the framework would help "deepen bilateral cooperation, strengthen economic resilience, enhance long-term competitiveness, and advance shared strategic interests," while pledging to expand trade and investment flows under the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement.
The two governments agreed to launch annual consultations between their foreign ministries and deepen defense cooperation between the Canadian Armed Forces and the Irish Defense Forces, particularly regarding maritime security training. The leaders also highlighted plans for closer collaboration on artificial intelligence and research, specifically endorsing support for "trustworthy AI systems grounded in shared democratic values."
Global security commitments
Carney and Martin reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. They also pledged continued cooperation toward peace and stability in the Middle East, according to the joint statement issued following the Dublin talks.
