Israel strikes southern Lebanon hours after ceasefire extension

Israeli warplanes and artillery targeted multiple towns in southern Lebanon early Friday, just hours after the US announced a three-week extension of the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire. Strikes hit Touline, Kherbet Selm, Majdal Zoun, and the Rihan heights. More than 2,200 people have been killed since March 2.
The Israeli military carried out airstrikes and artillery shelling across southern Lebanon early Friday, despite a recently announced three-week extension of the ceasefire, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported. Israeli warplanes struck a house in the town of Touline in the Marjayoun district at dawn, followed by artillery shelling in the area. Additional airstrikes targeted the town of Kherbet Selm. In the Tyre district, Israeli aircraft raided the outskirts of Majdal Zoun, while overnight strikes also hit the Rihan heights in the Jezzine area.
Violations after White House talks
The attacks came just hours after US President Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to extend their ceasefire by three weeks, following ambassador-level talks at the White House. The original US-brokered 10-day ceasefire, which took effect on April 16, had been set to expire on Sunday. Despite the extension, Israeli forces have continued daily violations, including airstrikes, artillery shelling, and ground incursions.
Humanitarian toll
Since March 2, expanded Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed more than 2,200 people and displaced over 1 million, according to Lebanese authorities.
