Israeli airstrikes kill one in Lebanon despite ceasefire agreement

Israeli military aircraft have conducted twelve separate airstrikes throughout southern and eastern Lebanon, resulting in one fatality and seven injuries despite the ceasefire arrangement established in November 2024. According to Lebanese authorities, the attacks targeted multiple districts including Sidon, Marjayoun, Bint Jbeil, and Baalbek, with powerful explosions generating substantial shockwaves and illuminating night skies across the border region.

Attack locations and impact

The Lebanese National News Agency documented strikes targeting Bnaafoul town in Sidon, Khirbet Dweir between Sarafand and Baysariyeh, and areas between Roumine and Houmine in Nabatieh district. Additional attacks included a drone strike in Blida during olive harvesting activities, with Israeli military officials claiming the operations targeted Hezbollah weapon storage facilities in Bekaa and southern Lebanon regions.

Lebanese military deployment plans

President Joseph Aoun confirmed Lebanon will progressively increase troop deployments south of the Litani River to reach 10,000 soldiers by the end of 2025, assuming security responsibilities following Israel's anticipated withdrawal. During discussions with UNIFIL Commander Diodato Abagnara, Aoun outlined coordination plans for implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701, including eventual assumption of positions currently maintained by UN peacekeeping forces.

Ceasefire violations and diplomatic context

The airstrikes represent continued violations of the November 2024 ceasefire that ended a year of cross-border hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel. Despite agreement terms requiring complete Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon by January 2025, Israeli forces maintain presence at five border outposts, while the conflict period resulted in over 4,000 fatalities and approximately 17,000 injuries before the truce implementation.
