Israeli police arrest Al-Aqsa Mosque imam amid escalating Jerusalem tensions

Sheikh Mohammed al-Abbasi was detained inside the mosque courtyards without explanation, WAFA reports. Hamas condemns "blatant interference" and calls for urgent Arab-Islamic action to protect Al-Aqsa from Judaization efforts.
Israeli police arrested the imam of Al-Aqsa Mosque, Sheikh Mohammed al-Abbasi, from inside the mosque's courtyards in occupied Jerusalem on Monday evening, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA. Citing local sources, WAFA reported the detention occurred without any stated reason, amid "escalating Israeli measures against the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque."
Restrictions and Incursions Intensify
The arrest comes as Israeli authorities impose increasing restrictions on imams, preachers, and worshippers at the holy site, limit entry for worshippers, and intensify settler incursions under heavy police protection. WAFA noted that al-Abbasi was detained inside the compound itself, marking a significant escalation in direct intervention against religious leadership.

Hamas Condemns 'Judaization' Efforts
Hamas issued a statement Tuesday condemning the arrest, revealing al-Abbasi had been "served with an order banning him from the mosque." The movement characterized the measure as "blatant interference in the affairs of Al-Aqsa and an unacceptable assault on its imams." Hamas warned that escalating violations by "the fascist occupation government" against Al-Aqsa's sanctity—including Ramadan restrictions and intensified settler raids—represent "dangerous interventions" aimed at "control and Judaize the mosque... imposing temporal and spatial division."

Call for Mobilization and International Action
Hamas called on Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and 1948 territories to remain stationed at Al-Aqsa and defend its identity. It urged the Arab League, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and Arab-Islamic nations to take urgent practical steps to pressure the occupation and halt violations. Occupied Jerusalem has witnessed rising tensions amid tightened Israeli security measures, including arrests and ban orders against religious figures and activists.
