NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe announced Thursday that the alliance's ballistic missile defense posture will remain at a "heightened level" until Iran's retaliatory strikes subside. The decision follows the successful interception of an Iranian missile that entered Turkish airspace, with NATO emphasizing its commitment to defending allies amid escalating regional conflict.

NATO has elevated its ballistic missile defense readiness across the alliance in response to ongoing Iranian retaliatory strikes, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe confirmed Thursday. The decision, implemented by NATO's Air Command, maintains defenses at an increased posture "until the threat from Iran's continued indiscriminate attacks across the region subsides," according to SHAPE spokesperson Martin L. O'Donnell.

Interception Over Türkiye

The announcement follows Wednesday's incident in which a ballistic munition fired from Iran toward Turkish airspace was successfully intercepted and neutralized by NATO air and missile defense units in the Eastern Mediterranean. Debris from the intercepted missile fell in Hatay province's Dortyol district with no casualties reported. "NATO's successful intercept of a ballistic missile from Iran that targeted Türkiye" prompted the alliance-wide posture adjustment, O'Donnell confirmed, noting that Türkiye was first to announce the interception.

Heightened Alert Justification

While operational security considerations prevent detailed disclosure of specific posture changes, SHAPE stated the adjustment gives the Supreme Allied Commander Europe "exactly what he needs to defend the Alliance based upon the current threat." The decision comes as the US-Israeli offensive against Iran, launched February 28, has now killed over 900 people including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top military officials. Tehran has retaliated with waves of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, threatening critical energy infrastructure and shipping lanes.
