Oman sees 'decisive progress' ahead in US-Iran talks, peace 'within reach'

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (L) meets with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi (R) in Geneva, Switzerland, on February 16, 2026. The two officials discussed bilateral relations and regional developments.

Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi briefed US Vice President JD Vance on negotiations that achieved "unprecedented progress," expressing optimism that diplomatic engagement can resolve outstanding issues.

Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi expressed strong optimism Friday that indirect US-Iran nuclear negotiations are poised for "further and decisive progress" in coming days, describing the latest round of talks as achieving "major, important and unprecedented progress." In comments posted on X after briefing US Vice President JD Vance, Albusaidi declared that "peace is within our reach."

Diplomatic Breakthrough

Following Thursday's third round of Omani-mediated talks in Geneva, Albusaidi said the discussions produced "creative and constructive ideas and proposals" that have helped narrow differences and bring viewpoints closer in pursuit of "an honorable agreement." He noted that the progress achieved could form "the essential foundation for the desired agreement." Vance praised Oman's "responsible role" and tangible mediation efforts, commending its sponsorship of the negotiations and contribution to enhancing prospects for regional stability through diplomatic means.

Mediator's Role

Oman has served as the critical intermediary between Tehran and Washington throughout the latest diplomatic push, hosting the first round in Muscat on Feb. 6 followed by two rounds in Geneva on Feb. 18 and Thursday. Albusaidi reaffirmed Muscat's commitment to continuing efforts to support dialogue and facilitate convergence between the parties, stressing Oman's belief that diplomatic engagement can offer solutions to outstanding issues. His upbeat assessment stands in contrast to the military buildup in the region and threats from Washington that force remains an option if negotiations fail.

Stakes and Demands

The talks resumed after stalling following Israeli and US attacks on Iran in June 2025. Washington demands that Iran fully halt uranium enrichment, transfer enriched uranium abroad, and abandon its ballistic missile program. Tehran insists that sanctions relief must accompany any restrictions on its nuclear program and has warned it would respond forcefully to any military attack. With Trump's deadline for a deal approaching, Albusaidi's declaration that decisive progress is imminent suggests the parties may be closing in on a framework that could avert the military confrontation that Israel has been urging Washington to pursue.
