US President Donald Trump told Italian television on Friday that Washington has 'won the war' against Tehran without external assistance, dismissing potential support from Group of Seven allies as 'irrelevant' just days before leaders are set to convene in Canada amid fragile ceasefire efforts between Iran and Israel.

US President Donald Trump on Friday declared that Washington has 'won the war' against Tehran and dismissed any support from Group of Seven nations as 'irrelevant,' speaking in a brief phone interview with Italian broadcaster La7 ahead of the bloc's upcoming summit. The remarks came during a call with the channel's Washington correspondent, according to the network. Trump's comments follow months of military confrontations between the US, Israel and Iran that began on February 28.

Asked whether he had a message for G7 leaders ahead of their June 15-17 meeting, Trump said the US had not required external backing. 'We didn't need any support. So, we have won the war. It was a bit irrelevant, irrelevant! I have to go. I'm in an important meeting, but we have won the war in Iran. We didn't need their help,' he said. The president cut the interview short to attend to other engagements, the broadcaster reported.

Fragile ceasefire efforts

Regional tensions began on February 28 when Israeli and US strikes on Iran triggered a cycle of military confrontations, retaliatory attacks and diplomatic disputes. Iran and Israel exchanged strikes in recent days before pulling back, highlighting the fragility of a ceasefire.

International mediators have attempted to revive diplomacy and prevent a broader conflict as the situation remains volatile. The Group of Seven summit is scheduled to take place from June 15-17 in Canada, where leaders are expected to discuss the security situation.
