President Donald Trump is being widely condemned for sharing an AI‑generated video on Truth Social that portrays Barack and Michelle Obama as monkeys and recycles debunked allegations of fraud in the 2020 election.

President Donald Trump sparked immediate condemnation on Friday after sharing a manipulated video on his Truth Social account that depicts former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as monkeys—imagery long used to dehumanize Black people. The clip, produced by the far‑right outlet Patriot News and posted during Black History Month, also repeats thoroughly debunked claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged.

Content of the Video and Reactions

The AI‑generated video alleges that voting machines in key states contained hidden wireless modems and foreign‑manufactured chips to alter results, assertions repeatedly rejected by courts and election authorities. California Governor Gavin Newsom, a leading Democrat, called Trump’s post “disgusting” and urged every Republican to denounce it. The imagery drew sharp criticism for its racist historical connotations and its timing in February, which is recognized as Black History Month in the United States.

Context of Trump’s Election Claims

Trump has persistently alleged that the 2020 election was stolen from him, despite losing dozens of legal challenges and bipartisan certifications of the results. In recent remarks, he has suggested the federal government should “nationalize” congressional elections in at least 15 states—a proposal legal scholars say conflicts with the Constitution, which assigns election administration to the states. Trump has also broadly claimed that any election he or his party loses is inherently fraudulent.

Political Outlook

The controversy emerges ahead of the November midterm elections, where Democrats are favored to regain control of one or both chambers of Congress, a typical pattern for the party not holding the presidency.
