Elif Eralp, a Turkish-origin politician, has been nominated as the Berlin Left Party's lead candidate for the 2026 state elections. Drawing inspiration from New York's Muslim Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Eralp is campaigning on a platform tackling anti-Muslim racism and the city's housing crisis, emerging as a key challenger to the incumbent conservative mayor.

Elif Eralp, a politician of Turkish descent, has been selected as the top candidate for Berlin's Left Party (Die Linke) in the pivotal 2026 state parliament elections. The political figure, who has drawn public comparisons to New York's Muslim Mayor Zohran Mamdani, aims to unseat the current conservative mayor, Kai Wegner. Recent polls indicate a tight race, with Die Linke trailing Wegner's Christian Democratic Union by a narrow margin.

A Platform Against Discrimination

Eralp, who identifies as Muslim, is making the fight against anti-Muslim racism and discrimination a central theme of her campaign. In a political climate where the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has gained traction, Eralp emphasizes the need to confront rising prejudice. "In many places, immigrants and Muslims are viewed with suspicion. This attitude must be recognized and combated," she stated, committing to bring these issues to the parliamentary forefront.

Grassroots Campaign Strategy

Emulating Mamdani's successful grassroots approach, Eralp is focusing on direct voter engagement and community outreach. Her policy agenda addresses key local concerns, including Berlin's severe housing shortage, improving public transportation, and lowering the high cost of living. She regularly visits mosques and community centers in her Kreuzberg constituency, pledging to build structures that prevent discrimination.
