The USS Gerald R. Ford, which departed Middle East operations following a laundry-area fire, is facing deeper reliability concerns, according to a Pentagon assessment. Nearly a decade after delivery, key systems including jet launch and radar lack sufficient combat testing data, raising questions about operational effectiveness.

The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier arrived at a Greek naval port on Monday for maintenance after leaving its deployment against Iran in the Middle East, but a new Pentagon assessment reveals the vessel faces far more significant challenges than a recent fire incident, according to Bloomberg. The carrier docked at Crete’s Naval Support Activity Souda Bay following operations in the Red Sea, with US officials confirming that a blaze in the main laundry area earlier this month displaced over 600 sailors from their sleeping quarters.

Broader reliability concerns

A Pentagon testing office assessment has identified a wide range of issues with the carrier, from serious to routine, many of which surfaced after combat testing began in October 2022. According to the report, there is insufficient current test data to evaluate the ship’s “operational suitability” under realistic combat conditions. Key systems remain under scrutiny, including the advanced jet launch and recovery technology, radar systems, weapons elevators for moving munitions, and the vessel’s ability to sustain operations if struck by enemy fire.

Extended deployment adds strain

Nearly a decade after its delivery, the carrier’s operational effectiveness remains unverified. The USS Gerald R. Ford has been deployed since June 2025, spending roughly nine months at sea—significantly longer than the standard seven-month deployment—with operations spanning from the Caribbean to the Middle East. The extended service has added considerable strain to both personnel and equipment.

Regional conflict continues

The carrier’s departure from Middle East operations comes amid a wider conflict that began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran. Iranian authorities report that over 1,300 people have been killed since hostilities began, including senior leaders. Tehran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting American military assets, causing infrastructure damage and disrupting global aviation and energy markets.

Türkiye’s strategic position

As the conflict intensifies across the region, Türkiye remains a critical actor in maintaining stability. Ankara’s strategic location along the Eastern Mediterranean and its control over key waterways place it at the center of regional security dynamics. Turkish diplomatic efforts continue to focus on de‑escalation, with officials warning that further military entanglement would have devastating consequences for all parties involved.
