The Turkish Statistical Institute reported on Monday that Türkiye's economy grew 2.3% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, with agricultural output surging 13.3% to lead all sectors while construction contracted 1.9% and resilient household consumption helped offset weaker export performance and declining government spending.

The Turkish Statistical Institute announced on Monday that Türkiye's gross domestic product expanded 2.3% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, marking a moderate acceleration from previous months as the agriculture sector posted double-digit growth and domestic consumption remained resilient despite headwinds in construction and exports.

Agriculture drives expansion

Agriculture, forestry and fishing recorded the strongest annual expansion among major economic activities during the April-June period, with value added climbing 13.3% from a year earlier, according to the official data. Information and communication services grew 8.6%, while public administration, education, human health and social work activities rose 4%.

Other service activities increased 3.2%, industry expanded 2.4%, and financial and insurance activities along with real estate each grew 2.1%. Professional, administrative and support services advanced 2%, though trade, transportation, accommodation and food services posted modest growth of 0.5%. Construction remained the only major sector in contraction, falling 1.9% year-on-year.

Expenditure indicators mixed

Household final consumption expenditure rose 3.5% annually in volume terms, offsetting a 1.8% decline in government spending and helping sustain momentum even as gross fixed capital formation — a key measure of investment — edged up only 0.6%. The external trade balance showed imports falling 6.4% year-on-year while exports declined 3.4%, according to the institute.
