South Korea's space agency said the 500-kilogram observation satellite will launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Tuesday, with officials expecting first contact via Norway's Svalbard ground station hours later to begin peninsula monitoring operations.

California countdown

South Korea's Korea AeroSpace Administration announced Monday that the 500-kilogram satellite has completed final preparations including fuel injection and function inspections at Vandenberg Space Force Base. The craft is scheduled to lift off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on Tuesday, according to Seoul-based Yonhap News. Engineers have monitored the vehicle's systems for the past month ahead of the launch window.

Orbital insertion sequence

The satellite will separate from the launch vehicle approximately two hours and 22 minutes after liftoff, KASA said. Ground controllers anticipate first contact through the Svalbard ground station in Norway roughly 31 minutes later, establishing the communications link necessary for orbital operations.

Domestic imaging capabilities

The spacecraft carries homegrown payloads, including an observation camera capable of photographing the entire Korean Peninsula every three days. Officials expect the satellite to support agricultural management, forest change detection, and disaster response operations, according to the report. This imaging frequency represents a significant expansion of Seoul's independent Earth-monitoring infrastructure.

Mission applications

The platform will also contribute to climate change analysis and public safety enhancement programs, extending capabilities developed under previous missions. The launch marks the fourth medium-sized satellite in South Korea's growing constellation, consolidating its position among nations with independent space-based observation assets.
