Fidan: Peace in Ukraine essential for regional security

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan declared that ending the Russia‑Ukraine war is essential for regional stability. Speaking after a trilateral meeting with Azerbaijan and Georgia, he warned that battlefield and diplomatic deadlock are fuelling tensions, and called for sustained peace efforts.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Monday that achieving peace in the Russia‑Ukraine war is essential for the stability and security of the region, while emphasising the growing strategic importance of cooperation among Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. Speaking at a joint press conference after the 10th Trilateral Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Georgia in Istanbul, Fidan warned that the conflict directly affects regional security.
Deadlock and risks
Fidan expressed concern over what he described as a deadlock both on the battlefield and in diplomatic efforts. “The steps taken by the parties to turn this deadlock to their advantage are unfortunately further increasing tensions on the ground,” he said, referring to recent attacks in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. He stressed that peace efforts must continue with determination. The ministers also discussed ongoing Iran‑US negotiations, warning that a conflict could bring the region and the world “to the brink of disaster.”
Middle Corridor and regional cooperation
Fidan highlighted the Middle Corridor’s growing role and the full operational capacity of the Baku‑Tbilisi‑Kars railway’s Georgian section. He expressed support for the Azerbaijan‑Armenia peace process and noted that Türkiye’s normalisation with Armenia continues in close coordination with Baku. The three ministers signed the Istanbul Declaration, reaffirming their commitment to regional ownership and cooperation. Fidan argued that the trilateral model could also be applied in the Balkans and the Middle East.
