In a historic first for its defense industry, Türkiye has signed an agreement to export a warship to Romania, marking the initial sale of such a vessel to a fellow NATO and European Union member state.

Türkiye's state-owned defense contractor ASFAT has finalized an agreement to sell a warship to Romania, a landmark deal that represents the first-ever export of a Turkish warship to a fellow NATO and European Union nation, according to Turkish defense sources on Wednesday. The vessel in question is the TCG Akhisar, a corvette completed at the Istanbul Shipyard Command in 2024.

A Milestone for Turkish Defense Industry

The company described the agreement as a concrete demonstration of the international reliability, quality, and technological proficiency achieved by the Turkish defense sector. In an official statement, ASFAT said the sale underscores the growing global competitiveness of Türkiye's indigenous military-industrial complex and elevates military cooperation between Ankara and Bucharest to a new strategic level.

Strategic Implications and Regional Security

Once integrated into the Romanian Naval Forces as a corvette, the TCG Akhisar is expected to contribute significantly to maritime security in the Black Sea region. ASFAT emphasized that the vessel will provide strong support for the ongoing modernization efforts of Romania's fleet, enhancing interoperability between the two allied navies within the NATO framework.

Broader Context of Defense Exports

This deal builds upon the expanding footprint of Türkiye's defense exports, which have seen notable growth in recent years across various platforms, including drones, armored vehicles, and now naval assets. Successfully supplying advanced military hardware to a NATO peer within the EU is viewed as a major validation of Türkiye's domestic engineering and manufacturing capabilities on the global defense stage.
