The release comes after Manila accused Chinese personnel of injuring a Filipino sailor during the same maritime incident.
China on Tuesday released video footage of a maritime confrontation in the South China Sea, saying Philippine vessels collided with a China Coast Guard patrol boat during an encounter near the disputed Ren’ai Jiao, also known internationally as Second Thomas Shoal. The footage was made public as Beijing and Manila exchanged conflicting accounts over the latest incident in one of Asia’s most sensitive maritime hotspots.
China presents its version of events
According to footage published by state-run China Daily, two rigid inflatable boats launched from what Beijing describes as the "illegally grounded" Philippine vessel No. 57 approached a China Coast Guard ship during Monday's operation. Chinese authorities claimed the Philippine boats ignored repeated warnings, closed in at high speed and attempted to surround and ram the patrol vessel.
Conflicting claims from Beijing and Manila
The China Coast Guard alleged that its officers were struck with paddles and long poles during the confrontation. In a statement, the agency said personnel responded with verbal warnings, navigational maneuvers and "corresponding countermeasures" while exercising "maximum restraint" and acting in accordance with Chinese law. Beijing also accused the Philippines of "distorting facts" and called on Manila to end what it described as provocative activities in the disputed waters.
Disputed waters remain a regional flashpoint
The incident occurred near Ren’ai Jiao, known in the Philippines as Ayungin Shoal, a strategically important reef at the center of long-running territorial disputes in the South China Sea. The release of the footage followed accusations by Philippine authorities that China Coast Guard personnel injured a Filipino sailor during the confrontation, claims that Beijing has denied. The latest exchange highlights continuing tensions in a waterway that remains critical for regional security and international shipping.
