German Chancellor Merz Praises Türkiye's Role in Gaza Ceasefire

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has publicly acknowledged Türkiye's significant diplomatic contribution to achieving the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement during the Sharm el-Sheikh peace summit. The German leader joined other world leaders in recognizing the multi-national effort that produced what he characterized as a historic breakthrough for regional stability.

In a press statement delivered at the Egyptian Red Sea resort, Chancellor Merz extended gratitude to all parties involved in facilitating the agreement. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved who made this day and this conference possible," Merz stated, specifically mentioning Egyptian President al-Sisi for hosting and US President Donald Trump for his initiative and commitment to resolving the conflict.

The German chancellor explicitly recognized Türkiye's governmental contribution alongside other key mediators. "The Emir of Qatar, whom I just met for a lengthy discussion, has contributed to this, as has the Turkish government," Merz affirmed. "This is the result of a wide range of efforts," he added, highlighting the collaborative nature of the diplomatic achievement.

Characterizing October 13, 2025, as "a historic day" that will feature prominently in history books, Merz declared: "The war in Gaza is over. This is good news after two years of bloodshed." He expressed optimism that the signed document would initiate "a phase of peace and harmonious coexistence in the region" and enable "lasting stability and lasting peace in the region—including lasting coexistence between the Palestinians and the Israeli state."

The chancellor's remarks came amid a gathering of numerous world leaders in Sharm el-Sheikh, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and other regional leaders. The high-level participation underscored broad international support for the ceasefire agreement and subsequent peace process.
