President Pezeshkian says attack on South Pars energy infrastructure could engulf entire world, as two refineries shut down following bombing.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian issued a stark warning Wednesday that US-Israeli attacks on the country's energy infrastructure could trigger uncontrollable consequences with global ramifications. The warning followed a strike on gas storage tanks at Iran's massive South Pars field that halted production at two major refineries.

Energy infrastructure targeted

Iranian media reported that a US-Israeli airstrike hit gas storage tanks at the South Pars field in the southern city of Asaluyeh on Wednesday, forcing the shutdown of two refineries with a combined capacity of approximately 100 million cubic meters per day. The attack represents a significant escalation in targeting Iran's economic lifeline, striking at the heart of the country's natural gas production capabilities.

Presidential condemnation

"Such aggressive acts will yield nothing for the Zionist–American enemy and their supporters," Pezeshkian said on X, the US social media platform. "This will complicate the situation & could have uncontrollable consequences, the scope of which could engulf the entire world," he warned. The president's language reflected Tehran's view that attacks on energy infrastructure cross a red line with potential to trigger broader confrontation affecting global energy supplies.

Conflict expands to economic targets

The strike on South Pars comes as the US-Israeli joint offensive against Iran, launched Feb. 28, has killed approximately 1,300 people including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting American military assets across Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries. By targeting energy infrastructure, the US and Israel appear to be expanding their campaign beyond leadership and military targets to include facilities central to Iran's economy and its ability to generate revenue. The attack threatens to further disrupt global energy markets already roiled by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
