Iraqi officials warn attacks near Baghdad airport threaten prison security

The strikes, some of which have landed dangerously close to the correctional facility, have raised serious concerns about the security of inmates classified as highly dangerous terrorists.

"The most intense attacks occurred today, with six strikes occurring between 6 p.m. and now, some of which landed very close to the prison," the ministry stated on its Telegram channel. The proximity of the explosions to the facility has prompted fears that a direct hit could compromise the prison's structural integrity or create opportunities for inmates to escape amid the chaos of ongoing bombardments.

Escalating Regional Conflict Spills into Iraq

The attacks near critical Iraqi infrastructure come against the backdrop of sharply heightened regional tensions following February 28 joint attacks by Israel and the United States on Iranian territory. That operation resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering a wave of retaliatory strikes across the region.

Türkiye continues to monitor the deteriorating security situation along its eastern border as Iran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting American military assets. Iraq has found itself increasingly drawn into the conflict, with multiple facilities linked to US interests or Iraqi government operations facing attacks from Iran-aligned forces.

The Al-Karkh prison, located in the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport, houses inmates described by Iraqi authorities as "highly dangerous terrorists," making any security breach potentially catastrophic.
