Poland says its fighter jets shadowed a Russian reconnaissance aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea close to Polish-controlled airspace, without any breach recorded. Authorities stressed that air defense units remain on heightened alert as overnight incidents near Belarus also prompted temporary restrictions, reflecting broader security vigilance across NATO’s eastern flank.

Polish military officials reported that fighter jets were deployed to identify and escort what they described as a Russian reconnaissance aircraft operating over international waters of the Baltic Sea near Poland’s area of responsibility. The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said the aircraft was visually confirmed and continuously monitored, adding that no violation of Polish airspace occurred.

Air defense activity during holiday period

Posting on X, the command noted that air defense units remained busy overnight despite the holiday period. Separate radar detections from the direction of Belarus were also tracked, with subsequent analysis determining the objects were smuggling balloons drifting with prevailing winds rather than military platforms.

Precautionary airspace measures

As a safety measure, civilian flights were temporarily restricted over parts of the Podlaskie region in northeastern Poland. Authorities said such closures are standard protocol during unidentified air activity and are intended to minimize risk while assessments are completed.

Baltic Sea context and regional security

Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said all incidents near the Baltic Sea and the Belarus border were “fully under control” of the Polish Army. Interceptions of Russian aircraft in the region are common within NATO air-policing missions, which also involve allies including Türkiye, and are shaped by heightened security concerns linked to the war in Ukraine and strained relations with Russia.
