Moscow and Kyiv accused each other of violating a 32-hour Orthodox Easter truce, with Russia reporting 1,971 Ukrainian breaches and Ukraine claiming 2,299 Russian violations. The ceasefire, which began Saturday, saw accusations of shelling, drone strikes, and frontline assaults within hours.

Russia and Ukraine exchanged fresh accusations on Sunday over the violation of a 32-hour ceasefire declared for the Orthodox Easter holiday. The temporary truce, which took effect at 1300GMT on Saturday, was meant to offer a brief respite but quickly unraveled as both sides reported extensive military activity.

Moscow’s claims of Ukrainian attacks

The Russian Defense Ministry stated that it recorded a total of 1,971 ceasefire violations by Ukrainian forces between the start of the truce and 8:00 am Moscow time (0500GMT). According to the statement, Ukrainian troops launched multiple nighttime attacks on Russian positions in the Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, and Donetsk regions.

Kyiv accuses Russia of widespread strikes

Ukraine’s General Staff, in a separate statement, claimed it documented 2,299 ceasefire violations by Russian forces during the same period. Kyiv accused Moscow of carrying out 28 front-line assaults, 479 shelling incidents, 747 kamikaze drone strikes, and 1,045 first-person view drone attacks. Independent verification of the competing claims remains difficult as the war, which entered its fifth year in February, continues to rage.
