Ten dead in Moscow subway crash
Ten people died and 149 were taken to hospital after a train derailed in Moscow's packed metro on Tuesday, city authorities say
A Moscow's subway crash during rush hour on Tuesday killed at least 10 people and other 149 people were injured, said the Russian capital's deputy mayor Pyotr Biryukov.
A total of 106 injured people were taken to hospital for immediate medical treatment, Biryukov told reporters.
"Right now 10 people (are dead)," the city's deputy mayor Pyotr Biryukov told journalists at the scene as the rescue operation continued, with about five people still believed to be trapped underground.
Some of the injured passengers have been taken to hospitals by ambulances and helicopters, local media said.
Officials pinned the blame on a decrease in high voltage on the line, which caused the train to make brake suddenly.
The accident is believed to be the most serious in the eight-decade history of the city's metro system.
Rescue efforts to evacuate the people trapped at the accident continued. Several streets near the neighborhood where the incident occurred have been closed to traffic.
