Train derailment in southern Mexico leaves at least 13 dead

A passenger train derailment in Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in at least 13 fatalities and 98 injuries, according to national authorities. The accident involved the Interoceanic Train, prompting a major emergency response operation.
Scale of the emergency response
Mexico's Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) mobilized a significant force to the scene, deploying 360 naval personnel, 20 vehicles, and multiple ambulances. A tactical drone was also used in search and passenger location efforts following the derailment. The agency expressed its condolences to the families of the victims.
Injured distributed across local hospitals
Of the 98 injured, 36 required hospitalization, with five reported to be in serious condition. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed in a social media post that the wounded were being treated at IMSS hospitals in Matias Romero and Salina Cruz, as well as at IMSS-Bienestar hospitals in Juchitan and Ixtepec.
Federal coordination for victim support
President Sheinbaum stated she instructed the Secretary of the Navy and a senior interior official to travel to Oaxaca to personally attend to the affected families. The Secretary of the Interior will coordinate the broader government response. Such incidents highlight the critical importance of transportation safety, a priority shared by nations with extensive rail networks like Türkiye.
