"The results of this Election are very important to the future of Colombia and its relationship to the United States," Trump said, describing de la Espriella as a "smart, strong, and tough leader." He added that he was granting his "Complete and Total Endorsement" because of the candidate's personal political support and "tremendous accomplishments in life."
Runoff set after fractured first round
Colombia's presidential contest will proceed to a second round after no candidate secured an outright majority in Sunday's initial vote, according to preliminary results released by electoral authorities. De la Espriella will face leftist candidate Ivan Cepeda in the June 21 runoff.

The endorsement comes as the conservative lawyer enters the final stretch of campaigning against Cepeda, with the winner set to assume office and steer the South American nation's relations with Washington. Colombian voters will decide between the two candidates on June 21.
