UK maritime agency reports vessel fire off Oman’s Kumzar

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said Monday that a vessel is on fire 8 nautical miles northwest of Kumzar in Oman's northernmost province, noting that the cause of the incident remains unverified as authorities open an investigation.

Investigation underway

In a statement, the maritime security agency said information from a verified source indicated the vessel was ablaze. UKMTO added that vessels transiting the area should proceed with caution while officials work to determine what sparked the fire.

Regional escalation

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region following the US and Israeli joint offensive against Iran in February. Tehran responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Gulf nations hosting American military assets, significantly disrupting commercial shipping lanes.

Washington and Tehran signed a Pakistani-mediated memorandum of understanding last month aimed at ending hostilities and securing lasting peace. Last week, clashes resumed over control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides exchanging attacks and further destabilizing the critical waterway.
