As you know, the "Ekmeleddin for bread" slogan, which was announced at Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu"s campaign speech yesterday, had forayed into the social media. Countless jokes, captions, counter-slogans and caricatures that make fun of the slogan were made. Yes, maybe these were cruel, but on the other hand, this introduced the fact that the only way to explain the present peculiarities was humor.
Yes, peculiarities. Being unaware of politics and the public this much and being unable to understand that what Turkey"s wide segments need is not bread or even cakes was a peculiarity. Being unaware that a citizen on the street had reached different altitudes and criteria – like eating one"s fill, paying attention to food"s caloric value, it"s taste, being healthy, having a variety of world cuisine – was really a peculiarity.
Making a bread promise to the society is an assurance of meeting all their basic needs. Being unable to see the distance between basic needs and topics like, creating one"s own brand in every field in the 21st century Turkey, advancing in science and building a space shuttle, was counted as peculiarity. Also, creating a catchy slogan doesn"t mean editing it with a simple rhyme that requires little intelligence. Those captions, jokes, counter slogans had revealed all the peculiarities incarnated in the opposition"s "Ekmeleddin for Bread" expression.
Among the comments on the social media, one said "The bread in the slogan was used as a verb stem; what was meant was to plant the seed of love, peace, reconciliation and unity". However, the wheat field-shaped Turkey map on the logo of the campaign was clearly explaining what was meant by the bread, without giving rise to doubts.
In fact, peace, reconciliation, love and unity were sweet words and could have found a buyer; if, since the day his name appeared, Ihsanoglu hadn"t presented contradiction in order to cast the image of "everyone"s president". Those contradictions were these:
1- Ihsanoglu, who made his first visit while holding the rude, racist Turkish-Left- wing magazine, which is in the mode of "We are supporting the death fasting, let them starve to death", said "Sadly, we are coming from a tradition that handled everything with a stick" in a TV program he attended in the following days. And thus, he supported the solution in the Kurdish issue. Through this he made the MHP base angry.
2- Mr. Ekmeleddin, who had presented an image contrary to Erdogan"s active presidency profile and rejected the idea of an executive Presidency since the beginning of his candidacy, has been fit with a campaign slogan and logo that had casted an "executive" image as much as the prime ministry competitions. Although it seemed like they had gone too far in this aspect, no one was expecting from Ihsanoglu to set up a sprinkler system in order to grow wheat. I wish he could have explained his vision that will come in place of this in a more explicit way to the voters.
3- Constant corrections, constant attempts to describe himself. At first, his conservative identity was remarked in order to win the hearts of the religionists. As the CHP base started to react to this, with the "he was never seen praying" information, they tried to put CHP"s main voters at ease. Afterwards, his wife was shown without any headscarf as a proof of his secular advocacy. When the conservative segment turned their faces, suddenly his "hodja" identity was reminded.
4- Other than a narrow nationalist segment, who had lost their heart talents as well as their reality feelings because of their hostility towards Erdogan, no one can say "We shouldn"t have opened the borders to Syrian refugees" openly. Because that statement is equal to leaving those people for dead and includes mercilessness, enough to question one"s humanity. Leave aside being a Muslim; even if you were an average earthling that respects a person"s right of living, you wouldn"t be able to make such a remorseless statement. However, Ihsanoglu stood up and repeated the opponent"s Syria cram before reading his election bulletin. Meanwhile, he talks about love in his election bulletin.
5- Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has said, "Turkey shouldn"t take a side on the Palestine topic." Since he said at a time when the massacre restarted in Palestine, in which Israel had started an ethnical cleanup, and during Ramadan, his statement prompted many reactions. Ihsanoglu tried to stave off the conservatives" rage with the "I"m the only Turk who has taken a badge of honor in Palestine" conductor this time.
Did it work? Not really…
It didn"t, because until now nobody could manage to be everyone"s president. Because being everyone"s meant being no one"s…
