Turkish Ministry of Communication on Thursday declared that popular social-media site Twitter pledged that it would comply with the local Turkish court's decisions ordering the removal of certain web links on the grounds of privacy violations.

'Twitter will act more responsibly to comply with the court decisions including closure of fake accounts. More than 200 contents have been removed in recent weeks and they will blur the visual contents, identified as harmful by the Turkish courts,' it said in an online statement.

Colin Crowell, Twitter's vice president in charge of global public policy, had arrived in Ankara on Monday to narrow communication gap with Turkey. The two-stage talks at Turkey's communication watchdog, TIB, partially succeed in narrowing communication gap between Twitter and Erdogan's government.

The ministry statement also said Turkish officials wanted the US-based company to open a local office in Ankara in order to have closer coordination. 'Twitter executives said they could not make a decision instantly about this as it will be discussed once again in their headquarters,' it said.

Twitter's unwillingness to act in accordance with Turkish laws led the country's telecoms regulator TIB to block access to the site during the country's critical local elections. Access to the site was restored last week after the Constitutional Court ruled that it was a violation of freedom of expression.
