The 3,000-year-old Treasure of Villena, considered one of Europe's most significant prehistoric collections, was stolen from the Villena Museum in southeastern Spain early Thursday, with authorities investigating whether a false alarm at a sports center was used to divert security forces during the heist.

Thieves stole the 3,000-year-old Treasure of Villena from a museum in southeastern Spain early Thursday, taking all 66 original pieces of one of Europe's most significant prehistoric collections, according to local broadcaster Cadena SER. Spanish authorities cordoned off the Villena Museum in Alicante province Thursday morning as investigators gathered evidence and reconstructed the events.

The thieves entered the facility after ripping out a window on the side of the building, Cadena SER reported. Investigators are examining whether a false alarm reported at a municipal sports center minutes before the theft was deliberately triggered to divert security forces from the museum.

Incalculable value

The stolen cache weighs approximately 10 kilograms and consists of bowls, bracelets, and ornaments crafted from gold, silver, amber, and iron, dating back around 3,000 years. The objects hold particular significance as they comprised the original artifacts rather than replicas — the museum had only recently moved the authentic collection from secure storage when the building opened two years ago.

Scholars consider the collection crucial for understanding prehistoric metalwork in the western Mediterranean, ranking it alongside the treasures discovered in the royal tombs of Mycenae in Greece. Scientific research published in 2023 indicated that two of the objects were likely fashioned from meteoritic iron, potentially dating them to the Late Bronze Age before terrestrial iron production began in the region.

Investigation underway

Authorities have yet to comment publicly on the case, though officials are reportedly considering whether a gang specializing in stealing historical artifacts orchestrated the robbery. The possibility that the heist was carried out on commission is also under examination, given the unique nature of the objects and their incalculable historical value.

The Treasure of Villena first emerged in December 1963, when most of it was found hidden inside a vessel buried in a dry riverbed in the Villena area. The collection represents one of the most important assemblages of Bronze Age gold tableware discovered in Europe.
