The 5th International Model OIC High School Summit has opened in Istanbul with a strong focus on the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The four-day event brings together young delegates to simulate diplomatic processes of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has emerged as the central theme at the 5th International Model OIC High School Summit, which commenced Friday in Istanbul. Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum (ICYF) President Taha Ayhan opened the four-day gathering by emphasizing the moral responsibility of youth in addressing the Palestinian issue, noting that their focus on accountability for attacks on Palestinians "reflects the depth of their conscience and sense of responsibility." The summit, being held at the Grand Cevahir Hotel & Convention Center through December 1, provides high school students with practical experience in diplomacy and multilateral decision-making within the framework of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation, reflecting Türkiye's ongoing commitment to nurturing future Muslim leaders.

Educational Diplomacy with Moral Responsibility

The simulation replicates the actual workings of the OIC, giving participants hands-on experience in negotiation and international diplomacy. Ayhan highlighted the particular significance of the event's Al-Quds Committee, given the Palestinian cause's consistent priority status within the ICYF agenda. He urged the young delegates to approach their discussions with "maturity, empathy and a strong sense of justice," acknowledging that this year's committees carry substantial moral responsibility as they address not only the Palestinian question but also post-conflict reconstruction, scientific cooperation, and environmental challenges under the slogan "Justice for Palestine: Resistance Against Oppression."

Growing Global Reach and New Initiatives

The Model OIC program has experienced rapid expansion, with clubs now operating in more than 800 universities and numerous high schools across over 70 countries. Ayhan attributed this growth to a shared belief that youth leadership "should be cultivated early," aligning with Quranic teachings that encourage the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. In a significant announcement, he revealed the launch of the MOIC Umrah Fellowship Program, which will provide a fully funded visit to Makkah and Madinah for 50 top-performing students worldwide, aiming to reward academic excellence while nurturing "the values of humility and responsibility."

Practical Activism and Leadership Development

Beyond theoretical diplomacy, the ICYF president emphasized the importance of practical activism in supporting the Palestinian cause. He outlined various forms of engagement, from participation in boycott movements and strategic use of social media to effective advocacy in appropriate platforms. "No act of solidarity is too small; each one carries its own weight," Ayhan stated, encouraging participants to fully engage in the summit by challenging their ideas, learning from others, and representing their schools and countries with integrity. The event will feature notable speakers including World Ethnosport Confederation President Necmeddin Bilal Erdogan and Türkiye's Communications Director Burhanettin Duran, further connecting the youth delegates with established leaders.
