German Cabinet approves dual citizenship draft law
The German Parliament approves a new draft law that will allow children of immigrants born in the country to be eligible to apply for dual citizenship
The dual citizenship draft will allow young people who are born in Germany and have lived there for at least eight years or attended school for six years by the age of 21, to be eligible for dual citizenship.
In the Federal Parliament in Berlin, 463 members of parliament voted for and 111 voted against the new draft law late Thursday night.
Under the current system, German-born children of immigrants have to pick one nationality by the age of 23. German citizens are not permitted to hold two passports.
