Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan makes a speech during the commemoration ceremony on the 87th anniversary of Ghazi Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s passing to eternity at Ataturk Supreme Council for Culture, Language and History in Ankara, Türkiye on November 10, 2025.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stated that strengthening the Republic of Türkiye represents the most meaningful tribute to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's legacy. Speaking at a ceremony marking the 87th anniversary of the republic founder's passing, Erdogan also announced the completion of restoration work on Ataturk's birthplace in Greece.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that fortifying the Republic of Türkiye constitutes the most significant homage to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's legacy during a ceremony commemorating the 87th anniversary of the republic founder's passing. The Turkish leader addressed attendees at an Ankara event honoring Ataturk, who established the modern Turkish state in 1923.

Tribute to Historical Continuity

During his address, Erdogan expressed gratitude toward the members of the first Grand National Assembly who spearheaded the War of Independence and honored martyrs from pivotal moments throughout Turkish history. The president recognized sacrifices from the Battle of Manzikert and Conquest of Istanbul to the Gallipoli Campaign and the July 15 coup attempt, emphasizing the unbroken chain of dedication throughout Türkiye's 102-year republican history.

The Republic as Enduring Legacy

Quoting Ataturk's declaration that "the Republic of Türkiye will live forever," Erdogan characterized these words as establishing the republic itself as the founder's most profound bequest. The president stated, "To honor his legacy means to strengthen, advance, and build upon the success of the republic — making it stronger and more prosperous in every field," framing national progress as the truest form of commemoration.

International Preservation Efforts

Erdogan announced the conclusion of an extensive restoration project at Ataturk's birthplace in Thessaloniki, Greece, conducted by Türkiye's Culture and Tourism Ministry and coordinated by TIKA. The historic residence has been meticulously returned to its 1953 appearance and reopened to international visitors, representing Türkiye's ongoing commitment to preserving physical landmarks associated with the republic founder's memory. The nation observed its traditional moment of silence at 9:05 a.m. to mark the time of Ataturk's passing in 1938 at Dolmabahce Palace.
