Lawyer calls for release of jailed IBDA-C leader
The lawyer calls for release of IBDA-C leader, jailed despite lack of evidence
The lawyer of jailed IBDA-C leader Salih Mirzabeyoglu called on Istanbul 14 High Criminal Court for retrial of Mirzabeyoglu.
''We want our appeal for retrial to be approved and him to be released by stopping of execution of his sentence. President can accelerate his release using his power,'' said Ölçer, the lawyer of Salih Mirzabeyoglu, the leader of Turkey's Great Eastern Islamic Raiders' Front, or IBDA-C, who has been imprisoned at F-type prison in Bolu province.
Ölçer denied allegations that circulated on social media, arguing an amnesty will be granted to Mirzabeyoglu.
''If the court rule retrial of Mirzabeyoglu, his innocence will be proven and his release will be inevitable,'' said Ölçer.
Mirzabeyoglu was arrested in 1998 and sentenced to death in April 2001 for "attempting to overthrow Turkey's secular state by force," despite a lack of concrete evidence.
His sentence was later changed to life imprisonment after Turkey abolished the death penalty in August 2002.
