Thousands march in Istanbul, in remembrance of the activists killed in Israel's raid on the Gaza-bound flotilla ship six years ago
Thousands of Turks gathered in Taksim Square's İstiklal Avenue for the “Free Quds March” on Sunday.
Protesters marched in Istanbul as a series of events were held marking the fifth anniversary of an Israeli attack that killed 10 people on a Gaza-bound ship.
During the ceremony, people prayed together, carried Palestinian flags and chanted slogans such as, "Mavi Marmara is our pride," “Palestinian people aren't alone” and “Murderer Israel get out Palestine.”
The humanitarian aid ship was attempting to lift the blockade of Gaza in 2010, when nine Turkish activists were killed after Israeli forces stormed the vessel. A 10th died in hospital four years later.
Relations between the two countries were seriously damaged in the aftermath of the incident. Israel apologized for "operational mistakes" in the raid in 2013. A compensation deal is still being negotiated between the two countries.
