Turkey extends army's mandate in Lebanon
Turkish troops to stay one more year in Lebanon as a part of UN peacekeeping force, under a Prime Ministry motion ratified by parliament
Turkish parliament on Wednesday prolonged the mandate of its armed forces in the multinational task force in Lebanon.
The renewed sanction marks the eighth time Turkey extended the mandate of its army in Lebanon since its participation in the mission in September 2006.
Originally established in 1978 to ensure Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL, expanded its original mandate in 2006 to monitor the cessation of hostilities between the governments in Lebanon and Israel.
There are currently 4,609 troops operating as part of the mission.
