Türkiye and UK sign landmark Eurofighter deal, launch strategic framework

Türkiye and the United Kingdom have formalized a comprehensive Eurofighter Typhoon agreement while establishing their first bilateral cooperation framework. The deal includes aircraft acquisitions from multiple nations and aims to expand trade to $40 billion.
Türkiye and the United Kingdom have concluded a significant defense agreement for Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets while establishing their inaugural bilateral cooperation framework during Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Ankara visit. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan characterized the defense arrangement as "a new sign of Türkiye-UK strategic relations" that would facilitate joint defense initiatives between the two NATO allies.
Comprehensive Defense Acquisition
Defense Minister Yaşar Güler revealed that Türkiye's Eurofighter procurement strategy involves acquiring 20 aircraft from the UK, supplemented by 12 jets each from Qatar and Oman. The minister indicated that Qatari-sourced aircraft could potentially arrive in early 2026, significantly enhancing the Turkish Air Force's capabilities through this multi-source acquisition approach that demonstrates Türkiye's expanding defense partnerships.
Economic and Strategic Dimensions
The leaders announced ambitious trade targets, with President Erdoğan committing to increase bilateral trade volume from the current level to $30 billion initially, eventually reaching $40 billion. Both nations will pursue an updated free trade agreement and explore joint investment opportunities in third countries, particularly in energy and defense sectors, while acknowledging the growing residential connections between their citizens.
Regional Policy Coordination
President Erdoğan welcomed Britain's decision to recognize Palestinian statehood, describing it as "a bold step toward a two-state solution." Regarding Gaza, the Turkish leader emphasized collective responsibility to maintain the ceasefire and called for restraint from the Israeli government, highlighting continued coordination between Ankara and London on Middle Eastern diplomatic matters despite their comprehensive defense partnership.
