The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Tuesday welcomed Washington's decision to remove Damascus from the State Sponsors of Terrorism List, saying the move eliminates a major obstacle to Syria's economic reconstruction and signals a new chapter in regional diplomatic engagement and stability.

Türkiye's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday welcomed the United States' decision to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, praising "the constructive approach of the US Administration" and saying the move demonstrated Washington's resolve to support post-conflict recovery.

Ankara hails 'constructive approach'

In a statement issued from Ankara, the ministry commended the US Congress for supporting the process and congratulated the Syrian government and its people for their "steadfastness." "This removes one of the major obstacles to Syria's economic recovery and reconstruction," the ministry said, noting that Ankara had "also long advocated" for such a step.

The ministry expressed hope that the delisting would give "further impetus to efforts to strengthen Syria's ties with the international community and establish lasting security and stability in the country." Washington's decision — which ends decades of sanctions dating to 1979 — is expected to unblock frozen assets and ease Damascus's access to international financing for rebuilding infrastructure.

Call for international cooperation

"At this juncture, we call on the international community to join forces" to support Syria's recovery, the ministry stated, adding that broader cooperation would prove essential for long-term stability. Ankara believes the removal of terrorism-related designations will facilitate humanitarian assistance and economic normalization across the region, according to the statement.
